January 3 rd Lincolnshire LDC Update Number 39
Dear all …………. On Behalf of Lincolnshire LDC May I wish you and your families a happy and
healthy New Year and let’s hope 2021 is kinder for everyone.
Vaccinations
As you are aware from last week’s update, the LDC has been asked to provide numbers of
dental staff in each practice in order that the CCG has an accurate figure when scoping
numbers to be vaccinated.
Thank you to all the practices who have sent figures promptly to Sharon and myself and we
were particularly pleased to receive communications from private practices not previously
on our radar.
It is disappointing however, that to date we have received replies from only 50% of practices
In Lincolnshire. I am aware that not all practices have been working their normal hours over
the holiday period and practice managers, who usually deal with such matters may be on
leave. If ever there was a time however, when everyone should reply to a request from the
LDC then this is it. I have fielded many questions from colleagues over the last few weeks
about when dentists and their teams will be vaccinated but without accurate information, it
is impossible for the CCG to plan for numbers. If you have not responded, please do so this
coming week. This information is vitally important and potentially could be life-saving. I
cannot emphasise this enough
Nigel Bourne
It is with much sadness that I have to inform you that Nigel died at home last Monday
afternoon, the 28 th December. Nigel was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2019
Many of you would have known Nigel. He worked mainly at the BUPA practice on
Doddington Road from qualification in Sheffield in 1982. For many years Nigel was a Clinical
Assistant at Lincoln County Hospital. He was a long standing LDC Committee member and
past LDC Chair. He also served as Chair and Secretary of Lincoln BDA.
I have received many lovely tributes about Nigel and I know Diane, his wife and his three
daughters have received the same. An Obituary will follow in the BDJ. He enjoyed the
outdoors with skiing and sailing a particular enjoyment. He was a black belt in Taekwondo
but claimed he never used this skill in dealing with a difficult patient. He also played for
Lincoln Rugby Club.
Nigel had a great sense of fun and he will be a great loss to the dental community in
Lincolnshire. He was a good man and one of us.
Martin Hargreaves was Nigel’s ex-partner in practice and Martin has kindly given me
permission to include his own personal tribute to Nigel in this update. It is very fitting and
sums up perfectly the feelings we have for Nigel.
“I have lost a partner and great friend of over 35 years. It was a privilege to have worked
with him. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of Dentistry particularly his Orthodontics.
I learnt a lot from him although thankfully not enough to ever cement a bracket onto
anyone! I know I shouldn't, but I do feel guilty that I am now enjoying my retirement, when
it has been cruelly taken away from him. I liked nothing more than having a beer with him,
listening to his hearty laugh, either in the pub or up a mountain. Life is not fair sometimes,
but it has to go on. Look after yourselves and your families and live for the moment.
Thinking of Di and the girls. God bless you Nigel. I'll miss you mate xx”
And finally …………….with Nigel’s death, there endeth a rubbish year. Let’s hope we can all
be vaccinated soon and we have a much better 2021. Stay safe and well
Best wishes
Kenny Hume Chair Lincolnshire LDC
